They are deluding themselves if they think that UKIP will meekly fade away if the Conservative Party lurches to the right. Nigel Farage is enjoying his fame far too much to let a detail like actually delivering a referendum get in the way of all the attention. The Shock of Eastleigh wasn’t a shock at all.

It is essential for the Conservatives to reconnect with voters before May’s local elections, she said. The MP issued her call amid reports that Theresa May, the Home Secretary, was positioning herself to succeed Mr Cameron after a series of poor opinion polls and election results….Dr Wollaston, the MP for Totnes who insisted she was a “Cameron loyalist”, warned that the Prime Minister’s “inner circle” still appear “far too posh, male and white”.
