UPDATED: Fox’s Suzanne Venker and the ‘War on Men’. Coverage and reactions

The war on men Fox News (Opinion) …As the author of three books on the American family and its intersection with pop culture, I’ve spent thirteen years examining social agendas as they pertain to sex, parenting, and gender roles. During this time, I’ve spoken with hundreds, if not thousands, of men and women. And in doing so, I’ve accidentally stumbled upon a subculture of men who’ve told me, in no uncertain terms, that they’re never getting married. When I ask them why, the answer is always the same. Women aren’t women anymore…

NEW Stephen Colbert bashes Fox News’ ‘War on Men’ article Los Angeles Times Never one to shy away from a controversy, Stephen Colbert weighed in on the “War on Men” fracas Wednesday night, offering up his (ironic) support for Venker. Since “women aren’t women anymore,” Colbert advised his fellow men to “always look for the Adam’s Apple.”  “Then,” he continued, “look for the Adam’s penis.” As for the claim that men are no longer interested in marriage because women are angry and defensive, Colbert was also convinced. “You need proof? Go up to any single woman and say, ‘The reason you’re not married is because you’re angry and defensive,’ ” he proposed. (Just be sure to wear a cup.)

NEW The mythical ‘war on men’ CNN …Each man told his story of how he was qualified for a job or qualified for a promotion that he did not get because of this putative reverse discrimination against white men. One ended his remarks with a line that served as the title for this show: “A black woman stole my job,” he declared. Asked to respond, I had but one question for these guys, a question about the title of the show. Actually, my question was about one word in the title of the show. I wanted to know about the word “my.” Why did the men think it was their job? Why wasn’t the title of the show “A black woman got a job” or “A black woman got the job”? The answer, I argued, was that these men felt entitled to the position, and that any effort to make the workplace more equal was perceived, by those men, as a loss.

NEW Stephen Colbert Tears Apart Suzanne Venker’s ‘War On Men’ Fox News Article … Huffington Post (satire) According to “How To Choose A Husband” author Suzanne Venker’s recent FoxNews.com article, “The War On Men,” all that progress the gender has made over the last 50 years is causing men to lose interest in marriage. NEW Why the Idea of ‘A War on Men’ is Actually the War on Men Huffington Post Each and every woman I know who had the displeasure of stumbling across Suzanne Venker’s opinion piece for Fox News, “The War on Men,” bristled at its sweeping generalizations about women and men. ‘The War on Men’ Author Suzanne Venker: I’m Misunderstood! The Daily Beast …The article in question is based on a book Venker has written that is expected to come out in the spring, called How to Choose a Husband. The book, she said, is a “cultural detox” for women who have been confused about what “empowerment” really means. “Women should understand that they absolutely can be strong and independent and be married, but that being feminine and vulnerable and taking on that more traditional role as being dependent on a man and letting him have some say in the matter is not wasting that empowerment. They are confusing what empowerment means. They think it’s about money and prestige, but there is a tremendous amount of empowerment in surrendering in the home and letting the man in your life be what he wants to be, which is to protect you and care for you and provide for you.”

Suzanne Venker: Men Aren’t Mad At Women’s Success–They Just Don’t Want To Help Forbes…In an email today she answered my question: if it’s not that men are threatened by the rise of women, what are they so upset about? “Men are not pissed about women being successful in their own right — they’re pissed about never being good enough. About always having to change to accommodate the endless list of women’s needs. It’s to the point where there just isn’t enough give and take: women are always suffering in some way.” In other words, they’re modern men are fine with women’s success—as long as they don’t have to change themselves in the process…

War On Men: As Marriage Rates Decline, the Search For Answers Intensifies PolicyMic Marriage has become a source of conflict for both male and females in the United States. According to the Pew Research Center, the number of newly-wed adults has steadily declined from 2008 to 2011. Fox News has interpreted this data as a result of women’s changing role in society in a piece titled “The War on Men”. However, the reality is much more complicated thanks to a significant shift in societal norms. Priorities have changed for both the American male and female. The changing environment has thus resulted in the failure of both sexes to meet on common ground regarding marriage.

Fox News’ Suzanne Venker: ‘Women Aren’t Women Anymore’ And There’s A War … Huffington Post Forget the War on Women. According to Fox News, there’s a vicious war on men going on. Suzanne Vekner, you’re not helping Current TV (blog) It’s rare someone sends me an article so offensive that I don’t even know where to begin tearing it apart. Does Marriage Demand Women Quit Their Jobs? Forbes If a woman wants a happy marriage she has to leave behind her career and submit herself to being a good wife and mother. It’s Time to Liberate Men The American Prospect The “war on men” article on the Fox News website, which—spoiler alert!—blames women for ruining modern men, has been snaking its way around the Internet the past few days and pissing off a lot of people in the process. While it’s ostensibly intended to shame and blame a generation of he-women determined to emasculate their male counterparts, it is instead, somewhat unintentionally, a valuable entrée into what happens when the evolution of gender roles for men does not keep pace with that of women.

4 hilariously sarcastic reactions to Fox’s ‘War on Men’ column The Week Magazine “The War on Men,” a Fox News op-ed by Suzanne Venker, has provoked outrage and scorn from critics for essentially blaming marital problems on women’s supposed anger and irrationality. After examining a Pew study that shows a rise in women ages 18 to …
