UK: May accused of cover-up. Helen Grant: I haven’t cried on David Cameron’s shoulder. UKIP warned over speech gaffes

Helen Grant: I haven’t cried on David Cameron’s shoulder The Guardian Even before she became an MP, Helen Grant was hailed as the new face of the Conservative party by the London Evening Standard. A solicitor with her own family law practice, she was elected MP for Maidstone and the Weald in May 2010.

And yet, since becoming minister for women and equalities in 2012, Grant has sailed relatively under the radar. Responsibility for the government’s controversial gay marriage bill fell to her earlier this year, but the brief was handed to sports minister Hugh Robertson at the last minute.

There have been, as there often are about female ministers, whispers of incompetence, of being too soft for the job, of being “over-promoted”. Grant’s “nervous” performances at the dispatch box were widely cited as the reason she was taken off the gay marriage bill.

UKIP warned over spate of speech gaffes expressandstar.com Dudley and Halesowen UK branch chairman Bill Etheridge should know all about the pitfalls – he and his wife Star quit the Tory party amid a storm about photographs of them posing with a golly doll.

Mr Etheridge, of Tipton Street, Sedgley, has just been appointed to the new post of UKIP campaign manager and political officer for the West Midlands. It is a role he proposed to UKIP’s national executive committee as the party became increasingly engulfed in criticism over comments made by members.

…A fresh storm erupted over comments he made opposing women quotas on boards of top City firms, arguing men and women were very different.

“Most women can find the mustard in the pantry quicker than a man, most men can reverse a car better than a woman,” Mr Bloom suggested. He has previously suggested that he wanted to deal with women’s issues because: ‘I just don’t think they clean behind the fridge enough.’
