The study, Transition to higher degrees across the UK: An analysis of national, international and individual differences, reveals that women and people from Black Caribbean and Bangladeshi groups have markedly lower rates of progression onto research degrees.

Labour MP Emma Lewell-Buck, 34, secured 12,293 votes to take the seat made vacant by the resignation of David Miliband. But it was a humiliating night for the Liberal Democrats. They came seventh, with 352 votes, and lost their deposit. That was half the number garnered by the BNP.
